Comparison of Endoscopy vs Colonoscopy

Doctors rely on both procedures to look inside the digestive system, but they’re checking very different territory. An endoscopy looks at the upper tract esophagus, stomach, and duodenum using a flexible camera passed through the mouth. It’s typically ordered for acid reflux, heartburn, trouble swallowing, vomiting, or upper abdominal pain. A colonoscopy goes the other direction, examining the rectum and colon through a camera inserted via the anus, and it’s the go-to for blood in the stool, chronic constipation, persistent diarrhea, or unexplained changes in bowel habits. Prep differs too; endoscopy just needs a few hours of fasting, while colonoscopy demands a full liquid-diet bowel prep the day before. Both can involve sedation and allow biopsies when something looks off, and both are usually same-day procedures.
